Universiy of Richmond Alert

H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) Response

Current Status: The University is observing normal operating hours. All scheduled activities at the University will continue as planned.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The University of Richmond is continuing to monitor developments with regard to the H1N1, or swine flu. There have been 11 confirmed cases of H1N1 flu in Virginia. According to the Virginia Department of Health, none of the cases involved hospitalization, and all of the patients are recovering well.

The University is observing normal operating hours. All scheduled activities at the University will continue as planned, including Commencement-related events. All persons are urged to observe the practical measures for preventing the spread of influenza. To see a map of college campuses reporting H1N1 cases, produced by the International Association of Emergency Managers-USA universities and colleges committee, see http://tinyurl.com/d3drrc.

At this time, there is no cause for alarm on campus. A student who developed flu-like symptoms last week has tested negative for all strains of influenza, including H1N1, and recovered sufficiently to return home for the summer.

The University’s Emergency Management Team (EMT) has been meeting regularly since the first cases of swine flu were reported in the United States. The EMT will continue to monitor the situation closely--in consultation with local, state and federal health authorities--and will keep the University community updated.

The University urges all members of the community to practice good hygiene, including frequent hand washing and sanitizing, and to avoid contact with others who show signs of illness. The symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of the regular seasonal influenza (fever, cough, headache, sore throat, body aches, fatigue). Learn other ways to stay healthy.
