Preparedness

The Office of Emergency Management is designed to plan and prepare for and mitigate emergencies; educate the community on preparedness; coordinate and support response to and recovery from an emergency on the University of Richmond campus. In addition, educating and including surrounding neighborhoods in preparedness activities is a priority.

What is your plan?

Taking basic steps to preparedness can make a difference.

  1. Make a plan. Plan for the unexpected. Know where you will go if you can’t get home.
  2. Make a kit. Along with basic supplies (water, food, battery-powered radio, flashlights and batteries), add a first aid kit, blankets and warm clothing. Don’t forget medications!
  3. Stay informed. Before, during, and after a storm, listen for information and instructions from officials; register for URALERT and listen to local TV and radio channels. You may also check 511 Virginia.
There are many opportunities for you to become involved in preparedness activities. For more information please contact:

Prepare for Winter Weather

Here are some common terms for winter weather:

Sleet is rain that turns to ice pellets before reaching the ground, causing roads to freeze and become slippery, severe sleet may down power lines and trees that force road closures.

Winter Weather Advisory: Cold, ice and snow are expected

Winter Storm Watch: severe weather, such as heavy snow or ice, is possible in the next day or two.

Winter Storm Warning: Severe winter conditions have begun or will begin very soon.

Blizzard Warning: Heavy snow and strong winds will produce a blinding snow, near visibility and deep drifts.

If you have a car, fill the gas tank up prior to any winter storm warning. Keep, or purchase and place in your car an ice scrapper and or snow brush. Always allow time for your vehicle to properly defrost the windows before you begin to drive. Check the local driving conditions for any road closures. If you are a student and your vehicle becomes disabled or stuck on or off campus, contact UR Police at 289-8715 for assistance and guidance.
